« Raiders sign OT Heyer | Main | Miller says Cable was key to the move »

Seahawks sign [Zach Miller]e|/nfl/players/8292 ; Raiders don’t

From The Chronicle Sports Desk:

Nobody was expecting the Raiders’ top free agent, Nnamdi Asomugha, to return to the team.

Tight end Zach Miller was another story. The team’s top pass catcher of 2010 figured to be the team’s top priority during this miniature offseason signing period.

And now he’s a Seattle Seahawk.

Miller has signed with the Seahawks and coach Pete Carroll after a visit to Seattle, where former Raiders head coach Tom Cable is the offensive line coach.

Yesterday, the Raiders gave linebacker Kamerion Wimbley a new deal that guarantees him $29 million. The previous plan was a deal that guaranteed him $11.3 million, but that was a bigger hit on the salary cap.

It was speculated that the Raiders made the new deal with Wimbley to clear room for signing Miller, but if that was the case, it didn’t work.

Miller signed a 5-year, $34 million contract with Seattle, with $17 million guaranteed, according to ESPN.

Miller had 60 catches for 685 yards last season, and 65 for 805 yards the season before. Last season, running back Darren McFadden was second on the Raiders in receptions with 47. Wide receiver Louis Murphy was third with 41, and then it was a drop to Darrius Heyward-Bay, who had 26 catches. Miller had five of the team’s 18 receiving touchdowns.

Raider Fans,

The CA Highway Patrol is reporting that someone that looks like Hue Jackson is on the Golden Gate Bridge!

A bit shocked that we lose Miller. 34 million- 17 guaranteed seems a bit pricey. For those saying we are headed for a losing season? not sure how you get that... Aso had been with us for 8 years...no winning seasons...Miller- he was quality...but his departure will not mean a losing season... better line play, a healthy, determined McFadden and Hue Jackson are determiners of our fate this season...I still say 10-6

I'll be honest. At first, I was very disappointed in seeing Zach head up north to join Seattle. I felt that losing him was, indeed, a bad move.

But after learning more about the situation leading to his defection to the NFC, and what all is behind it, I am feeling less bumbed out about it now.

If the Raiders can bring in TE Kevin Boss, that would help some. Be it Boss and/or another veteran WR, another set of hands are needed now to offset the loss of Zach Miller.

If Hue does, indeed, have a contingency plan to offset this loss, it is going to be very needed now.

This loss accentuates the problem at WR.

Probably why they drafted Richard Gordon, big blocking TE. 6' 4", 265 lbs and runs a 4.6 forty! RAIDERS may have foreseen this. It was said some of the players were truly upset over TC's dismissal! Okay Myers here's you shot, make the most of it. A loss nonetheless but. we'll be fine. ****GO RAIDERS****

Fellas, fellas, fellas . . . Zach Miller was and IS waaaay over-rated. He'll see a real TE regularly each season in the 9ers V. Davis.

Miller has had at least 2 concussions. 1 more and he is out major time. 5 years is along time
I am sure they can find another one
