Task instructions

Examples

In this task you will see a claim and a table at the top of the page. After reading them you must adjust the claim.

Adjust the given claim as little as possible to get a well-formed sentence which is verified or refuted given the table. You are allowed to change the claim's meaning to form the new claim.

Avoid writing simple claims, but instead combine information from at least two different table rows or columns. When writing refuted claims, avoid using negation words such as "not" and "never". Below we have highlighted the table cells which were used to adjust the claim.

1. Example: VERIFIED CLAIM
1. Look at the claim at the top of the page:

Milwaukee, the largest city in Wisconsin, sits on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

2. Look at the accompanying table and (if available) its caption:

State or territoryPer person incomePopulation
District of Columbia$45,877658,893
Alaska$33,062736,732
Minnesota$32,6385,457,173
Colorado$32,3575,355,866
Washington$31,8417,061,530
Rhode Island$30,8301,055,173
Delaware$30,488935,614
California$30,44138,802,500
Iowa$28,3613,107,126
Wisconsin$28,2135,757,564
Maine$27,9781,330,089
Kansas$27,8702,904,021

3. Afterwards adjust the claim such that it can be verified or refuted given the table.

The average income in Wisconsin is $5,000 less than its neighbors state Minnesota.

4. Select if the adjusted claim can be verified or refuted given the table.

EXPLANATION: The claim states that the largest city in Wisconsin (Milwaukee) is at the shore of Lake Michigan. We adjust the claim so that it can be verified given the table. As Wisconsin is the only part of the claim which is related to the table, we keep Wisconsin and adjust the claim using information from the 4th row (Minnesota) and the 11th row (Wisconsin). As our adjusted claim can be verified using the table, we select "Verified" after entering the new claim.

2. Example: REFUTED CLAIM
1. Look at the claim at the top of the page:

More people died from the influenza virus last year than from COVID-19.

2. Look at the table and (if available) its caption:

Symptomatic IllnessesMedical VisitsHospitalizationsDeaths
2017-2018*45,000,00021,000,000810,00061,000

3. Afterwards adjust the claim such that it can be verified or refuted given the table.

More people died from the influenza virus in the US last year than in the previous years.

4. Select if the adjusted claim can be verified or refuted given the table.

EXPLANATION: The given claim compares last year's COVID-19 and influenza virus deaths. The table does not mention COVID-19 but the influenza virus. We adjust the claim by deleting and adding a few words such that it can be refuted given the information in the table. We use information from the caption, the last column and from row two and four.

3. Example: REFUTED CLAIM
1. Look at the claim at the top of the page:

New Zealand started collecting statistics on crime rates in the 90's.

2. Look at the table and (if available) its caption:

Caption:

3. Afterwards adjust the claim such that it can be verified or refuted given the table.

Statistics on crime rates demonstrate that in Australia the crime rate has increased since the 90's.

4. Select if the adjusted claim can be verified or refuted given the table.

EXPLANATION: The claim says that crime statistics were collected in New Zealand since the 90's. The table is not related to New Zealand but to crime rates in Australia. However, the table does not tell us since when statistics on Australian crime rates have been collected. Therefore we form a claim on Australian crime rates which can be refuted using the table and avoid using negation words.
