Weakly Supervised Multilingual Causality Extraction from Wikipedia

Proceedings of the 2019 Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing and the 9th International Joint Conference on Natural Language Processing (EMNLP-IJCNLP)

We present a method for extracting causality knowledge from Wikipedia, such as Protectionism -> Trade war, where the cause and effect entities correspond to Wikipedia articles. Such causality knowledge is easy to verify by reading corresponding Wikipedia articles, to translate to multiple languages through Wikidata, and to connect to knowledge bases derived from Wikipedia. Our method exploits Wikipedia article sections that describe causality and the redundancy stemming from the multilinguality of Wikipedia. Experiments showed that our method achieved precision and recall above 98% and 64%, respectively. In particular, it could extract causalities whose cause and effect were written distantly in a Wikipedia article. We have released the code and data for further research.

Proceedings of COLING 2016, the 26th International Conference on Computational Linguistics: System Demonstrations

We demonstrate our large-scale NLP systems: WISDOM X, DISAANA, and D-SUMM. WISDOM X provides numerous possible answers including unpredictable ones to widely diverse natural language questions to provide deep insights about a broad range of issues. DISAANA and D-SUMM enable us to assess the damage caused by large-scale disasters in real time using Twitter as an information source.

Proceedings of the Sixth International Conference on Language Resources and Evaluation (LREC'08)

In recent years, language resources acquired from theWeb are released, and these data improve the performance of applications in several NLP tasks. Although the language resources based on the web page unit are useful in NLP tasks and applications such as knowledge acquisition, document retrieval and document summarization, such language resources are not released so far. In this paper, we propose a data format for results of web page processing, and a search engine infrastructure which makes it possible to share approximately 100 million Japanese web data. By obtaining the web data, NLP researchers are enabled to begin their own processing immediately without analyzing web pages by themselves.
