Some things are worth rebuilding
Making over the creaky Victorian into a bed-and-breakfast is probably a crazy plan, but the ramshackle house is all Tara has. And even though she can barely scrape together her brother's college fees, she won't give up. Until the townsfolk decide to show the independent "Sullivan girl" that she's in over her head.
What can Matt Connors possibly do to help this notorious beauty? He's just a carpenter to her, and besides, he's got problems of his own. By pounding nails, Matt struggles to blot out the trauma of his last years in a big-city police department. But once Tara thaws enough to let him in, he has to face the past. And the past is full of memories both of them aretrying to outrun?.

This review is from: A Difficult Woman (Harlequin Superromance, No 1379) (Mass Market Paperback) A DIFFICULT WOMAN BY Jeannie Watt
November 11, 2006
Amazon rating 4/5
"Tara Sullivan is a woman with a chip on her shoulder. She's not very nice, not very friendly, and has a bad reputation. People talk about her and her no-good family. When Matt Connors arrives in town to help his step-uncle Luke - who is working for Tara, converting an old Victorian house into a bed and breakfast inn - he finds Tara downright cold.
As Matt gets to know Tara better, however, he sees the real woman behind the mask. Tara and her younger brother Nicky have had to live with their family's reputation. Since she couldn't change this, she simply endured the town's scrutiny every day. Making matters worse is her history with Ryan Somers, the town's good-looking, rich bachelor. All the girls were in love with him, but Tara knows what he was really like, and it wasn't pretty.
After a few false starts, Matt and Tara become a team, trying to fix up the Victorian house in time for the huge town reunion, only days away. Tara is racing to fix up the place so she can open it to the public and accept her first boarders. But the Somers, both father and son, are out to get her, finding ways to slow down her progress. " - complete review found at BookLoons - M. Lofton
I really enjoyed this superromance. What I found unique was the heroine, Tara Sullivan. She was not a very likeable person to start with, but she grows on you. It made for an interesting romance with a good story. A very well-done debut by Jeannie Watt!

5.0 out of 5 stars A difficult Woman, May 19, 2008

Jeannie Watt
Reviewed by Robert
Jeanne Watt is the best author I've stumbled across in recent memory. When I say "stumbled across" I mean that literally. I had been looking through a book rack in a supermarket when my eye caught the partial cover of a book in the bottom row. I glimpsed a cowboy and a ranch building in the background. I quickly grabbed it without reading the back cover or browsing any of the pages because I had been looking for a Western-themed book for some time.
When we returned home, I discovered that the book was Jeannie's "The Brother Returns," a novel classified in the Romance genre. I almost discarded it but decided to look through it because I had nothing else to do. Imagine my pleasant surprise when the book turned out to be an excellent read about two ordinary, 21st Century people in a small community in Nevada's Cowboy Country.
I was so captivated by Jeannie's style and talents that I immediately logged onto Amazon's site and ordered another of her novels, "A Difficult Woman." This one was a page-turner of the first rank.
The story chronicles the relationship between Tara Sullivan and Matt Connors, two individuals who labor under the umbrella of unwarranted suspicion and mistrust. Tara's family members are the virtual outcasts of the community of Big Sky, Nevada, and as usual in small towns, descendents are the beneficiaries of the sins of their mothers and fathers. In Tara's case, her father served prison time.
Matt, a Reno police officer, is suspected of being a crooked cop because his father had been implicated in a ring of police officers who fenced recovered goods. The old corruption of blood characteristic of humans applies in Matt's case as well. To prove his fitness as an honest cop, he saves the life of a fellow officer but in the process kills an assailant. He's recognized as a hero but he begins to suffer the symptoms of extreme stress, nightmares, insomnia, and the sweats. Matt is place on administrative leave pending a fitness for duty examination.
Tara has inherited a large pioneer from her aunt in Big Sky. She also inherited a large debt on the property, complete with a balloon payment due shortly. She dreams about converting the old home to a bed and breakfast and firmly believes she can bring in a steady revenue stream. But the old home needs extensive renovation. She hires Luke a trusted older acquaintance, for most of the work and he in turn hires his step-nephew, Matt, a skilled carpenter.
Neither of the primary characters seems interested in the other at first. But it soon becomes clear that the two are deeply attracted. Naturally, as you would suspect in a romance novel, romance flares. I don't intend to include any spoilers here. Suffice to say, their path to love is filled with a few surprising twists and turns.
The pleasure in this book is the very ordinariness of its characters, ordinary people in an ordinary small town who go about their business in an ordinary way. There are no lords and ladies, no descendents of royalty, no powerful and experienced men teaching innocent maidens the exquisite joys of sex. There are no passages of glorious ecstasy, no orgasmic explosions or rocket trips to the moon. Jeannie Watt is a skilled author, a master of the art of suggestion. Imagination is more powerful than graphic words on a page, and Diane creates the subtle illusion of the ultimate sexual experience. When the ultimate finally occurs, our imagination convinces is that we actually are Tara or Matt.
This is Jeannie's first novel, but I swear you wouldn't suspect it. Her dialogue is superb. In fact, if you didn't know she is a woman, you'd think the author is a male. No woman could create such realistic male dialogue. That requires a great deal of observational and listening skills.
Although this novel is of the Romance genre and is published under the Ballantine imprint, it isn't purely and solely about non-stop romance. Jeannie weaves love into the story when it is appropriate, but the underlying currents of the tale run deeper than that. The tale touches on hopes and dreams and the abilities of regular people to meet the challenges of life and cope with hardships. We've all experienced the same kinds of travails. It's good to read about people like us. And it's good to be reminded once in awhile that ordinary people can experience extraordinary romance with a degree of intensity equal to that of lords and ladies and worshipful virgins.
Jeannie has other works in the mill which I fully intend to read. This is unusual for me because I do not read romance stories. Until now. Jeannie's works are the first I have read in more years than I care to mention.I'm glad I stumbled across her book in a supermarket.
One final thought. As a classic American male, I am not overly romantic (at least not publicly). My reading tastes run to Westerns. Every little boy wants grow up to be a cowboy, right? Somehow, Jeannie tapped into my interest in the West and my subterranean romantic tendencies.

This review is from: A Difficult Woman (Harlequin Superromance, No 1379) (Mass Market Paperback) Jeannie Watt brings the story to life...keeps the reader hanging...all while showing the multiple layers of her main characters. Here's hoping a follow-up book for her secondary characters is coming soon!
