CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - It is the end of an era for another local business. This one is a victim of the Independence Boulevard widening project.
It'll be great for drivers to get that monkey off their backs, but there's another 800 pound gorilla in the room. Closings are a painful blow to businesses like Yesteryears.
The restaurant and bar is one of the most unique places along that Independence corridor.
After more than 15 years in business, the owner is being forced to sell everything he owns, all in the name of progress.
Having to part with Eight foot tall King Kong brings tears to Steve Hoxworth's eyes.
"The way the economy is, I just can't afford to open a new place right now," he said.
Beyond the economy, he has a date with reality.
His beloved Yesteryears is facing a moment with the wrecking ball, as the state expands East Independence Boulevard.
"All of my life I collected old stuff, I had a lot of this stuff before I got in the bar business."
And what a collection, Steve will have to part company with things like a pump organ made in 1928, but the oldest item is a motorized horse that was used to make movies.
It turned 99 years old back in February.
His son Trevor learned to perfect his free throw shot in this environment with a scoreboard from the old coliseum, the sign from the Oakhurst Country Club, and damaged roof from one of Michael Waltrip's banged up rides.
"We've have some of the poorest people in Charlotte. We have multi-millionaires," Hoxworth said.
Since 1995, It's been place for Everyman, which is an eternity in the bar business.
A reminder from Steve's past life hangs on the wall. It is a plaque from his years as a Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Officer.
"I still have the police uniform. I still have my old police helmet from, when I rode a motorcycle."
He keeps the costume and images from his years as Charlotte's first official Bud Man.
"We're down to about three weeks, and when it's all over I'll go sit down and have a cry and have a cry and go on."
There's no set fee for what buyers will find at Saturday's sale, but for Steve Hoxworth and his legion of customers the memories here are priceless.
