How do you like [Andre Smith]e|/nfl/players/9270 now?
By Carlos "Big C" Holmes | Friday, October 28, 2011, 07:09 AM
Rap artist Kool Moe Dee and country music superstar Toby Keith used the catchphrase How Ya Like Me Now to make hit records. Bengals right offensive tackle [Andre Smith]e|/nfl/players/9270 is using the same phrase to silence his critics who questioned his desire on the gridiron.
Smith, in his third year with Cincinnati, is starting to live up to expectations this season and prove he can dominate. The University of Alabama product has allowed only one sack and is evolving into a bookend on the line.
Hes gone from dud to stud in a short amount of time.
Its time for me to do what Im supposed to do to help the team, Smith said. It was time to give up the poor me attitude and just do something about it. Its working well for me and the offensive line as a unit.
The measuring stick in Smiths progress came in Week 6 against Indianapolis. Smith and left tackle Andrew Whitworth negated the pass rush of Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.
Smith, heavily scrutinized since being drafted by Cincinnati in the first round in 2009, no longer is the butt of the jokes that surfaced after his shirtless pre-draft workout revealed an alarmingly jiggly physique. He reported to training camp in shape this year.
I think I earned a lot of respect when I came to camp at the weight I did, Smith said. I earned the teams overall respect by showing my willingness to work hard.
The 6-foot-4, 335-pound Smith said his mom deserves most of the credit for feeding him a steady diet of fish, grilled chicken and vegetables during the offseason. Its paying off because a more trimmed Smith is playing with better technique and working harder.
Im happy where I am right now, but I still want to get better as a football player, Smith said. I want to continue to work on my fundamentals and work hard for the team. It was time for me to step up. I felt it in my heart and I no longer want to let the team or myself down.
