MIAMI GARDENS It had been nearly a year since Larry Johnson had played in an NFL game before Thursday night. [Will Allen]e had ended a 21-month hiatus from the game only five days earlier.
Both Dolphin veterans made the final exhibition game one to remember as each played key roles in a 17-3 victory over Dallas at Sun Life Stadium.
Allen prevented a Dallas touchdown early in the game, knocking a pass into the air that Tyrone Culver intercepted. Moments later, Johnson went around right end for a 22-yard touchdown run to open the scoring.
"It's been a long while," said Johnson, who hadn't played since Week 2 of last season and hadn't scored a touchdown since 2008.
Miami finished the pre-season 3-1 and Dallas 2-2.
Both teams rested the vast majority of their starters, leaving Miami's two veterans surrounded by a host of rookies and fringe players hoping to prolong their NFL opportunity. In that venue, Allen and Johnson were able to rise above, just as they did in their prime.
Allen, who hasn't played a regular-season game since October 2009, said he couldn't remember being as nervous as he was before Thursday night, when he played the entire first half in place of Sean Smith at left cornerback.
Allen made his biggest impact after the Cowboys had reached the Miami 3 on their first possession of the game. Quarterback Stephen McGee looked for tight end Martin Rucker in the back of the end zone and Allen came off his man to knock the ball in the air. Culver came down with it for a touchback.
"I'm happy with that pick; I just wish it could've been my pick," Allen said, smiling. "Just out there having fun. It felt pretty good."
Allen wound up with five tackles, tied for tops on the team, and a pass defensed.
Johnson, who had signed only 10 days earlier, finished with 10 carries for 39 yards. He showed patience on the TD run, waiting for his blockers to clear a path.
"He did a great job going in and knocking that guy out, so I only had to beat one guy," Johnson said. "Anytime you have a toss play there's always going to be that one guy.
"I wish I could've done more," he added. "I'm still auditioning for the other 31 teams that think I'm dead and gone."
The starters getting the night off gave the Dolphins' 50-some other players a chance to show why they deserve to stick around for the regular season. Some of the better performers:
* Quarterback [Matt Moore]e eased concerns that he's not up to the task of backing up Chad Henne, hitting 9-of-11 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. His passer rating for the evening was an eye-popping 149.1.
* Brian Hartline reinforced the argument that he should be the No. 2 wide receiver, making a pair of nice catches for 37 yards.
* Reshad Jones started at free safety ahead of [Chris Clemons]e, but Clemons was better Thursday with three first-half tackles.
* Rookie Clyde Gates, the speedster whose long catch had been 17 yards, got behind coverage and caught a 42-yard pass down the sideline to set up Miami's second score, a 17-yard pass from Moore to Jeron Mastrud.
Miami's other points came on a 50-yard field goal by Dan Carpenter.
